GoreBox 27 Maniac Mystery Guide – How to Play (and Survive) as Every Role

Maniac Mystery is a multiplayer mode in GoreBox 27 where players are randomly assigned one of three roles: Citizen, Detective, or Maniac. Each role has a different objective, but the basic rules are straightforward. Maniacs must eliminate everyone else, Detectives must stop the Maniacs, and Citizens must stay alive.

Although the mode has some similarities to Among Us, Maniac Mystery focuses more on direct confrontations than discussions or voting. Here’s how it works and what you should do in each role.
How Maniac Mystery Works in GoreBox 27
When you join a Maniac Mystery server, the game assigns you a role at the start of the match. You won’t get to choose whether you’re a Citizen, Detective, or Maniac.
Detectives and Maniacs begin with revolvers, while Citizens are unarmed. Players can also discover and report dead bodies. However, reporting a body only notifies the other players. It doesn’t trigger an emergency meeting or a voting phase.

The maps are relatively small, so encounters happen frequently. Most matches eventually come down to whether the Maniacs can eliminate everyone before the Detectives identify and kill them.
How to Play as a Citizen
Citizens have one objective: survive until the Maniacs are eliminated.
You don’t have a weapon, so confronting a Maniac directly is usually a bad idea. Fortunately, Citizens can see which players are Detectives through the tags above their heads.

Your best strategy is to stay close to a Detective. They have a revolver and can defend you if a Maniac attacks. Wandering alone makes you an easier target, especially since the maps don’t offer many reliable hiding places.
Citizens can inspect dead bodies to check their wounds and report their discovery. However, they receive less information than Detectives, so these actions have limited practical value. Focus on staying alive rather than trying to investigate every suspicious player.
How to Play as a Detective
Detectives start with a revolver and must eliminate the Maniacs without mistakenly attacking innocent players.
You can recognize other Detectives through their visible role tags. This helps you identify allies and avoid confusing them with armed enemies.

Detectives can also inspect bodies to obtain more information about their wounds. While this can help with an investigation, matches often move too quickly for detailed detective work.
Instead, pay attention to armed players who aren’t identified as Detectives. If you witness someone attacking a Citizen, you may have found a Maniac. Stay alert, protect nearby Citizens when possible, and avoid firing without a good reason.
How to Play as a Maniac
Maniacs begin with a revolver and must eliminate the other players. You can also identify fellow Maniacs through their role tags.
Your biggest challenge is avoiding detection. Shooting someone in front of a Detective immediately puts you at risk, so look for opportunities to attack isolated players.
However, don’t spend too much time hiding. The maps are small, and encounters are difficult to avoid. Keep track of nearby Detectives and choose your fights carefully.

Maniac Mystery is a simple mode, but quick reactions matter when gunfights begin. Playing GoreBox 27 on PC with BlueStacks gives you access to keyboard and mouse controls, which can make moving, aiming, and firing more comfortable.
Whether you’re protecting Citizens as a Detective or hunting players as a Maniac, understanding your role is the most important part of winning.
